Cell Phones and Personal Communication

With the use of cell phones at an all time high, one must ask if having this as a source of technology is increasing the level of human communication or if it is in fact making it less personable. With so much of the communication being conducted via text messages and instant messaging, what is being lost. With so much time being spent addicted to texting and messaging, what happens to those who are physically with those who are constantly spending quality time with their hand on the key board conducting multiple conversation, often filled with meaningless words, rather than conversing with those who they are with. Much in the way as many people question if in fact e-mail and computers have lessed or increased the personal communication that once took place when people were forced to hand write letters or not too long ago, pick up a phone and actually dial a phone number and have a conversation.

In a recent study of college students, the result was dependent on who the relations ship was with, as to if cell phones provided a satisfying mode for communication. Interestingly enough, most felt that if communicating with a friend, texting or messaging increased the level of the friendship. However, they felt that with family members, face to face communication was strongest. Furthermore, the relationship with a spouse was best done through all modes of communication. While this was just one study, I believe it displays the level in which many people today conduct thier modes of communication and leads us into looking further into how this truly relates to the relationships we have with others.
